XTRADRIVE DOUBLES YOUR HARDDISK AND UNINSTALLS EASILY
Integrated Information Technology takes a novel approach to doubling hard disk
space with its $99 XtraDrive on the fly compression software. Compared with
the polished, featurerich technology of AddStor's SuperStor or Stacker, Its
method is direct and workmanlike, but no less effective in increasing drive
capacity while compressing and decompressing files transparently. Its features
and limitations make it best for use on notebooks, and its compression methods
warrants a bit of caution.
XtraDrive doubles the capacity of a hard disk by replacing the DOS boot record
at the BIOS level and routing INT 13 calls through its own device driver and
interrupt handler.
The program effectively creates an additional drive equal in capacity to the
installed hard disk, but you can create only one new virtual drive for each
partition up to the maximum allowed by DOS. While you get greater
compressability of files on the virtual drive built with 8K clusters, it
offers overall total compression ratios competitive with rivals.
On the downside, loss of or damage to the XtraDrive device driver prevents
access to the whole hard disk. With the other types of programs damage to
their device driver only prevents you to the drive that is compressed.
XtraDrive also includes an uninstallation program that returns the system
cleanly to its preinstallation state. This is a great program for portables.
